Barrel & Grit field manual
Rock tumbler parts: barrel, belt and drive care
Clean sealing surfaces, inspect the drive and keep a small rock tumbler parts kit so a long batch is not stranded by a simple wear item.
Clean the seal before every run
Grit on a lid groove or barrel rim can create a slow leak. Wash the surfaces, inspect the gasket and tighten only as the manufacturer directs.
Watch the rollers and bushings
Wipe slurry from the shafts and make sure the barrel turns freely. Lubricate only the points and with the oil specified by the manufacturer; oil on a drive surface can cause slipping.
Replace a tired belt early
Cracks, glazing or repeated slipping are signs to fit the correct model-specific belt. Keeping one inexpensive spare beside the machine prevents a paused batch from hardening.
Consider a dedicated polish barrel
A second compatible barrel reduces the chance that coarse silicon carbide reaches the final polish. Label it clearly and keep its lid, media and cleaning brush together.
