Rock tumbler troubleshooting: leaks, slipping barrels and stalled batches

Most rock tumbler problems can be traced to the seal, barrel load, drive contact or stage preparation. Check one variable at a time before replacing the machine.

If the barrel leaks

Stop the machine, clean the rim and lid groove, inspect the gasket and reload according to the manual. Even a few grains of grit can prevent a reliable seal.

If the barrel stops turning

Check that the total loaded weight is within capacity, wipe moisture from the rollers and inspect the belt. Oil only the manufacturer-specified bearings—not the drive surface.

If the stones barely change

Confirm the barrel is in its working fill zone and the load is cascading. Fresh coarse silicon carbide, several stone sizes and enough time are usually more important than a faster setting.

If the polish stays dull

Return to surface inspection. Separate incompatible material, remove pitted stones and protect fine stages from coarse-grit contamination before trying another polish cycle.
